The lake was one of the largest fresh water lakes for fishing, hunting and camping in Southern California. It became a recreational area in 1937 and continued until 1968. . Then, the Corona Land Development Company made negotiations with Leta Evan, the Martins, and Temescal; thus the new community of Canyon Lake began to form in early 1968. The project size is 2,017 acres.Canyon Lake was composed of 3,414 owner-occupied homes, 379 leased homes and 81 homes rented on a month-to month basis. In addition, there are 410 weekend homes and 103 spec homes. Currently, there are 41 homes under construction, and 334 lots remain vacant. |
- Canyon Lakes HistoryToday the lake is surrounded by beautiful homes, and residents enjoy many amenities, such as a golf course, equestrian center, beaches, parks, and a lodge. The Canyon Lake Property Owners Association has jurisdiction inside the gates, and property owners pay a yearly assessment. In December 1990, the community became a city, and all of the areas outside the gates are under the jurisdiction of the city council.
The original developers had envisioned a weekend-retreat type of community, but current residents include retirees, young families, and those looking for security or a change of residence. The areas surrounding Canyon Lake are rapidly becoming urban. The purpose of this book is to illustrate the community's history and its visual changes recorded by photographic images taken during the last 100 years.
